6 Reviews of the Laser Competition 1
By: Corlis XYZ Reason: I own(ed) one Made in: 2013 Rating:
This is the first tent I've owned and I've enjoyed using it. With a bit of practice pitching is simple, although as others have mentioned it is important to tension everything correctly. It can feel as if you are going to pull it apart but it does need to be quite taught for the tent to ventilate properly. When I pitched properly condensation was less of an issue.
For a one man tent I feel it strikes a good balance between space, low profile, and weight. It's really light but has plenty of room in there for you and your gear and a generous and useful porch. I had plenty of opportunities to cook just outside the doorway when it was raining!
I have some doubts about the longevity of the tent - hence my rating - I'm simply not sure that long-term some of the key junctures of the tent will not rip under the tension required to erect properly, notably the plastic buckle at the entrance and the inner tent at the top of it's arch where it is zipped up. These two areas are under a lot of strain. The ground sheet also seems a little flimsy, although I have had no problems so far (TN make others you can buy separately). Having said this, I have read about modifications you can easily make to the tent to resolve these issues if you can be bothered.
I'm really happy with it. Small, lightweight, and quick and easy to pack away. Perfect for cycling or walking trips.

Ideal one-person tent, used for walking, wild camping, cycling. You have to judge it on its own terms but three specific criticisms (extensive mesh to top of door makes it cold sometimes; I'd have welcomed a hook or loop inside, at apex ideally, and the hook at the bottom of the zip is idiotically designed and fiddly but maybe newer ones are different). Otherwise I'd have given it a 10 for the freedom and pleasure it has given me.

I use this for mountain marathons and my wife and I sleep in it. It is a little cosy for two !
I have used it in exceptional weather and it worked fine. We remained dry and the tent took it all.
It is very light material and you need to take care around sharp objects.
All in all a great tent if you use it for the right job.

I love my Laser Comp, really lightweight and a true back-packing tent. However, it does have it's faults. This is really minor, but the tent is very flimsy in gale force winds and hard to erect in them conditions, also condensation is a problem on cold still nights. For that reason, I gave it 8/10.
However, this remains my favourite tent to date.

I bought a Laser Competition for my first camping/backpacking trips, and haven't looked back. The light weight is a huge bonus and it's easy to put up although I would suggest a practice in the back garden first. I haven't yet had to use mine in bad weather so can't comment on that, but I agree with Mildgreen's comment that condensation is an issue, perhaps an inevitable one in such a small tent. The Laser Competition is my home from home on holiday now, and I wouldn't swap it for anything.

Great 1 man tent. Had it for 2 and a half years and wouldn't swap it for any other tent I've looked at. The obvious selling point is the light weight. Less than a kilo is fantastic but this would be no good if performance was not up to scratch, especially at £300 a pop.
It's easy to put up, takes 5 minutes in the dark and wet. Needs carefully tensioning to minimise condensation, this takes a bit of practice to learn to be agressive with your pegging. The inner stays attached to the outer, at least whilst you are on your travels, and the two are erected together, with the main pole going into the outer.
There's loads of space inside and loads of porch room. The dimensions are just so that you can sit cross-legged or lie on your side in the tent, have your gear in the porch, and your camping stove cooking away in the doorway while you sit safely inside with your sleeping bag around your legs.
The Laser Comp withstands any weather that is thrown at it in my experience - gale force winds and driving rain are not a problem, if anything a bit of a breeze is preferable in damp conditions as condensation can be an issue with the nylon inner. I'm not sure why it is suggested this is a 3 season tent: plenty of people use this tent for winter fellcamping. This is only the second 1 man tent I've owned and to be fair, condensation always seems to be an issue in a tent this size: rigging set up and ventilation are the key. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this tent, and if I were +1 when backpacking I'd certainly look at getting the two man version (the laser large or something, I think).

Manufacturer's Description
An update to the original Laser Competition for 2011 sees three new features: New Carbon fibre end poles that collapse into two parts to allow a more compact pack size. Extra ventilation points at each and of the tent. 4 Extra Guy points (pegs and guy line not supplied).
The Laser Competition 1 is sure to be a favourite for Adventure Races, Mountain Marathons and Ultra Light Backpacking. New 8.55mm DAC Featherlite poles weight, and when used with the complementary waterproof hood the tent is guaranteed waterproof.
Exceptional comfort for 1 person yet there is space for 2 (if you're good friends). The Laser Competition 1 pitches flysheet first and the inner can be left connected, so it is exceptionally quick to pitch. The transverse porch creates more usable space than a longitudinal porch and provides excellent shelter from the wind as well as a large entrance. 2g Titanium pegs included as standard
Flysheet: Watersheld SL (silicon coated) (HH 3000 mm) Groundsheet: Waterbloc SL (HH 5000 mm) Inner: Nylon 6.6 Poles; 8.55mm DAC Featherlite 7001 aluminium alloy Sleeps: 1+ Weight [min]: 870 g Weight [max]: 930 g Packed size: 12 x 40 cm Pegs: 12 x 2g titanium
